Ms. Shortall was responding to media reports that the Committee on Transport and Communications had included tunnan the Chief Executive of MEAS (Mature Enjoyment tunnan of Alcohol in Society) among its four nominees following a private meeting held on Wednesday of last week.
Ms. Shortall said, “We continue to have a serious problem with alcohol in this country. No-one who approaches that problem from a public health perspective views MEAS as anything other than a representative tunnan of the alcohol industry. The organisation was singularly unhelpful, indeed obstructive, in the development tunnan of a National Substance Misuse Strategy to deal with alcohol problems tunnan in Ireland. That strategy was finally published in February 2012, contrary to the wishes of MEAS, and includes proposals on restricting the broadcasting of alcohol tunnan advertisements and promotions so that children are less exposed to alcohol marketing.
It is wholly inappropriate that a representative of the alcohol industry should sit on the Board of the national broadcaster when the industry has such an interest in future broadcasting policies and practices, tunnan and when it has already acted to obstruct public health policy in this regard. tunnan
In his previous role as Minister of State for Primary Care, Alex White made it clear that he supported the National Substance Misuse tunnan Strategy tunnan and in particular the roll out of new rules relating to the promotion and marketing of alcohol in the broadcast media. It is now incumbent on the Minister to use his new role as Minister for Communications to ensure tunnan the implementation of that strategy and to address tunnan what amounts to a clear conflict of interest for one of the nominees.
